beta carotene

Головна / Dictionary / beta carotene

Beta carotene is a plant pigment that belongs to the carotenoid family and is not actually a vitamin itself but is a precursor to vitamin A. It acts as an antioxidant, helping protect cells from oxidative damage that could potentially lead to cancer. When the body needs vitamin A, it converts beta carotene into this fat-soluble vitamin.

Some common sources of beta carotene include vegetables like carrots, sweet potatoes, and spinach, as well as fruits like cantaloupes and apricots.

Excessive intake of beta carotene can cause carotenemia, a condition where the skin temporarily turns yellow or orange. This is harmless and is often seen in infants who consume large amounts of foods like mashed carrots.
