gastroesophageal reflux disease
gastroesophageal reflux disease A condition in which the stomach contents return back up into the esophagus. Abbreviated GERD. GERD frequently causes heartburn because of irritation of the esophagus by stomach acid. GERD can lead to scarring and stricture of the esophagus, which requires stretching (dilating) of the esophagus. Ten percent of patients with GERD develop Barrett esophagus, which increases the risk of cancer of the esophagus. Eighty percent of patients with GERD also have hiatal hernias. Treatment may involve the use of antacids or medications to decrease acid production or accelerate stomach emptying. See also Barrett esophagus, hiatal hernia.
