gynecologic oncologist A physician who specializes in treating cancers of the female reproductive organs.

gynecoid pelvis A pelvis that is characteristic of a woman; see female pelvis.

gynecoid obesity Overweight with a fat distribution generally characteristic of a woman, with the largest accumulation around the hips.

gynecoid Like a woman; womanly, female.

gyn Short for gynecology and gynecologist.

GVHD Graft-versus-host disease.

gutta percha A natural material derived from tree sap that can be formed to various shapes under heat. Because gutta percha does not cause allergic reactions, it is often used to pack the empty spaces left when a root canal is performed.

gum disease Inflammation of the soft tissue (gingiva) and abnormal loss of the bone surrounding the teeth. Guillain-Barre syndrome A rare disorder characterized by a misdirected immune response against the peripheral nervous system associated with progressive symmetrical paralysis and loss of reflexes, usually beginning in the legs. guided imagery An alternative medicine technique in which patients use their imagination to visualize improved health, or to “attack” a disease, such as a tumor. Guided imagery may be utilized as complementary medicine in some oncology centers and other medical facilities.
