A polyp is an abnormal growth of tissue that develops on the inner lining of a hollow organ. Polyps can occur in various parts of the body, including the colon, stomach, nasal cavity, uterus, bladder, and vocal cords.
Types of Polyps
Neoplastic (Adenomatous) Polyps – Have the potential to become cancerous (especially in the colon).
Non-neoplastic Polyps – Usually benign and include hyperplastic, inflammatory, and hamartomatous polyps.
Common Locations and Significance
Colon (Colorectal Polyps) – Can develop into colorectal cancer if not removed.
Stomach (Gastric Polyps) – Often benign but may be associated with chronic inflammation.
Uterus (Endometrial Polyps) – May cause abnormal bleeding.
Nasal Polyps – Can cause breathing difficulties and chronic sinus infections.
Bladder Polyps – Some types may lead to bladder cancer.
Symptoms (Varies by location)
Often asymptomatic
Bleeding (rectal, nasal, uterine, etc.)
Obstruction (nasal congestion, bowel obstruction)
Changes in bowel habits (for colorectal polyps)
Diagnosis & Treatment
Colonoscopy, endoscopy, ultrasound, or imaging tests help detect polyps.
Polypectomy (removal of polyps) is often performed to prevent complications.
Biopsy determines if the polyp is benign or malignant.
