Riboflavin (Vitamin B2) is a water-soluble vitamin that is essential for growth, energy production, and the maintenance of healthy tissues.

Sources of Riboflavin

  • Dietary sources:
    • Dairy products (milk, cheese, yogurt)
    • Eggs
    • Lean meats (especially liver)
    • Green leafy vegetables (spinach, broccoli)
    • Fortified cereals and grains
    • Nuts and seeds
  • Supplements: Available in B-complex vitamins and multivitamins.

Functions

  • Energy production: Riboflavin is involved in the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. It is a precursor for the production of flavin mononucleotide (FMN) and flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD), coenzymes that are essential for energy production in the body.
  • Antioxidant activity: It helps in reducing oxidative stress by supporting the function of glutathione, a major antioxidant in the body.
  • Cellular function: Riboflavin supports normal cell growth and repair and is crucial for the health of the skin, eyes, and nervous system.

Deficiency & Health Effects

  • Symptoms:
    • Sore throat
    • Cracks or sores on the lips (cheilosis) and corners of the mouth (angular stomatitis)
    • Swollen, inflamed tongue (glossitis)
    • Skin rashes, especially in areas exposed to sunlight
    • Fatigue and weakness
    • In severe cases, damage to the nervous system
  • Conditions:
    • Ariboflavinosis: A condition caused by riboflavin deficiency, leading to symptoms like the ones listed above.
    • Increased risk of cataracts: Riboflavin deficiency may contribute to the development of cataracts in the eyes.

  • Adult men: 1.3 mg
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women: 1.4 mg
