Hypokalemia is commonly caused by conditions that lead to loss of potassium through the gastrointestinal tract such as vomiting, diarrhea, impaired kidney function, and use of diuretic medications. Symptoms may include fatigue, weakness, muscle cramping, and arrythmias of the heart.
