Symptoms of bacterial prostatitis include chills, fever, pain in the lower back and genital area, body aches, testicular pain, burning or painful urination, and the frequent and urgent need to urinate. In bacterial prostatitis, the urinary tract is infected, as evidenced by the presence of white blood cells and bacteria in the urine. Acute bacterial prostatitis is treated with antibiotics. In chronic bacterial prostatitis, a defect in the prostate gland is the focal point for the persistent infection. Effective treatment of chronic bacterial prostatitis requires identification and correction of this defect before antibiotics can be effective.
