Poly is a shorthand term for polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMN), a type of white blood cell (WBC) that plays a crucial role in the immune response, particularly in fighting bacterial infections.

Characteristics of PMNs

Multilobed nucleus – The name “polymorphonuclear” refers to the variable shape of the nucleus.
Granules in the cytoplasm – Contain enzymes that help destroy pathogens.
Short lifespan – Typically survive for only a few hours to days.

Types of PMNs (Granulocytes)

Neutrophils – The most abundant type; first responders in bacterial infections.
Eosinophils – Involved in allergic reactions and parasitic infections.
Basophils – Release histamine and play a role in allergic responses.

Clinical Significance

Increased PMNs (Neutrophilia):
